Acne Rosacea: A Not so Rosy Skin Condition

Acne Rosacea, though sounds like some rose’s scientific name, is not a flower at all. It is actually a pesky skin disorder, also known with the moniker adult acne that is characterized by patches of redness and inflammation commonly found on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and around the mouth. Acne Rosacea more commonly affects women than men within the age bracket of 30 to 50. Fair-skinned people are more prone to Acne Rosacea than those who are not. It is even considered a more severe form of acne than the common Acne Vulgaris.

It is considered a hereditary, chronic skin disorder. Acne Rosacea’s classic symptom of blotchy redness may come and go, but it can also become permanent. In its early stage, Acne Rosacea sufferers may encounter stinging sensations coupled with a dry or tight skin feeling. Acne Rosacea may also affect the eyelids and the eyes. This is manifested by a certain burning sensation that leads to teary-eyed-ness of the afflicted person. Many are not really aware of what’s to come when they see this skin problem. At first, Acne Rosacea may be confused with sunburn.

This delays the immediate treatment that this disease needs to be attended with. In the hope that this skin disorder will go away all by itself, it’s often left unchecked that will consequently allow it to grow worse. In its advanced state, Acne Rosacea affects more of the face as the skin swells, cysts develop, and knobby bumps grow on the nose. This is the reason behind the bulbous appearance of some men, since this developed condition of Acne Rosacea is more prevalent on men than women. As a conclusion, it is more common in women but more severe in men.

The causes of Rosacea, as many diseases usually are, are not fully known. But researchers have suggested certain factors that may be associated with the development of this skin dilemma. One is a certain disorder that affects the swelling of the facial blood vessels causes the swelling and bumpy appearance of the skin. Another factor that may lead to the incidence of Acne Rosacea is one’s genetic makeup combined with certain environmental influences that may cause skin irritation. According to doctors, it may even be furthered by sunlight, stress, sinusitis, allergies, hot liquids, spicy foods, alcohol (oral or topical) and extreme temperature. Further research reports suspect that a certain bacterium (Helicobacter pylori) that mingles with the blood vessels may form Acne Rosacea. Another microorganism with the name of Demodex folliculorum that is present in the hair follicles is also attributed to the occurrence of this skin disorder since it initiates the inflammation. Zinc deficiency is also blamed to cause Rosacea.

Dealing properly with Acne Rosacea is not also that well defined either since its source or cause remains not fully discovered. But some natural means to avoid the proliferation of Acne Rosacea are recommended. Avoiding alcohol and hot drinks consumption, preventing exposure to strong sunlight, wind and extreme temperatures, not getting involved with too much strenuous activity and the use of skin cleansers with no harsh ingredients, are said to help in warding off this menacing skin disease. Cure or treatment may either be accomplished by certain oral or topical medications or through laser or surgery. Of course, invasive procedures entail more risks, thus needs ample thinking before one resorts to any of them.
